Quick Overview
Felwood was once part of northern Kalimdor's living forests before the Burning Legion poisoned it during the Third War. Tichondrius used the Skull of Gul'dan to spread demonic corruption, and Illidan consumed the artifact's power while defeating him. The original world still bears the mark of that struggle in its poisoned wildlife, satyrs, and struggling defenders of the forest.
Full History
Before the final campaigns of the Third War, the forests west of Mount Hyjal belonged to the great living wilderness of the kaldorei. Ancient trees, streams, and clearings formed a landscape protected by the night elves and the spirits of the wild. As the Burning Legion advanced toward Hyjal, that beauty became a battlefield. Archimonde's servants could not simply march through a forest guarded by druids and ancient protectors; they needed to weaken the living defenses of the land itself.
Tichondrius carried out that task with the Skull of Gul'dan. The artifact's terrible power contaminated the woods, transforming wildlife and twisting ancient guardians into monstrous versions of themselves. What had been a shelter for the kaldorei became a hazardous passage filled with poison, rot, and demonic influence. The new name Felwood described a wound that could be seen and smelled in the ground and water. This was not merely damage from soldiers' fires: the place itself had been steeped in magic hostile to life.
Illidan Stormrage entered the story at the moment of greatest danger. Drawn by his hunger for power and the chance to confront the Legion, he seized the Skull of Gul'dan's energies and used the strength they granted to defeat Tichondrius. That victory removed a major demonic commander, but it did not erase the corruption already spread across the forest. Nor did it heal Illidan's relationship with his people. Malfurion judged his brother's embrace of demonic power intolerable and banished him, leaving Felwood as a lasting reminder of the costs of the war.
In the original World of Warcraft era, satyrs, warped beasts, and hostile furbolgs still occupy the forest. Night elves, tauren, and allies of the living world attempt to resist or lessen the damage, but no immediate restoration is promised. Travelers heading toward Winterspring or Hyjal cross a land still paying for an old campaign. Its story is one of a tactical victory whose consequences remained etched into the soil after the armies departed.
