Quick Overview
The Winterfall are a furbolg tribe occupying settlements in Winterspring, including Winterfall Village and Timbermaw Post. Once associated with the neighboring Timbermaw, they became hostile under an influence tied to the corruption spreading through northern Kalimdor. Their conflict joins the frozen reaches of Winterspring to the poisoned woodlands of Felwood. The tribe's descent helps explain why the Timbermaw defended its passages so fiercely after the Third War.
Full History
Winterspring lies beyond Felwood's mountains, a country of snow and hot springs rather than the ash-dark forest to the west. The furbolgs who settled there adapted to its colder climate, living in villages and moving through the valleys between towering ridges. Among them were the Winterfall, whose settlements eventually included Winterfall Village and a post near the western passages. The tribe's story became intertwined with that of the Timbermaw, the furbolgs who held the tunnel route between Winterspring, Moonglade and Felwood.
These peoples were not always bitter enemies. The Winterfall and Timbermaw had known a relationship of kinship and cooperation, but the aftermath of the Third War changed the region. While the Legion was defeated, its corruption remained in northern Kalimdor. The Deadwood of Felwood succumbed to the taint, and the Winterfall came to be associated with the same spreading hostility. Their movements and alliances tied the suffering of the snow country to the poisoned forest beyond the pass.
For the Timbermaw, the change was especially painful. The refuge that had sheltered them from corruption now stood between two hostile tribes: Deadwood in Felwood and Winterfall in Winterspring. Travelers seeking to pass through the mountains encountered not merely a dispute over land but a guard force protecting the last security of a threatened community. A tunnel that might once have connected friendly furbolg settlements became a defensive boundary, and former neighbors now regarded one another with fear.
Winterfall raiders and sentries occupied places important to the circulation of people through Winterspring. Their presence at Timbermaw Post was a visible statement of conflict near the very passage their former allies controlled. The tribe also maintained its own traditions, including beads carried as wards against evil. Such practices make the tragedy more complicated than a simple transformation into mindless enemies: corrupted people can still preserve fragments of the ceremonies and belongings that once defined them.
The opening World of Warcraft era finds the Winterfall hostile, not redeemed or reunited. Any later stories about their leaders or complete cures must not be silently projected backward into this setting. Their continuing conflict reflects a lingering wound of the Burning Legion's invasion. The war ended on Mount Hyjal, but along the mountain routes between Felwood and Winterspring, its consequences still separate tribes that had once shared a world.
