Quick Overview

Winterspring is a remote northern Kalimdor wilderness where furbolg tribes, old elven ruins, and dragons survive among snowbound valleys. Timbermaw Hold guards a passage between the mountains, while Winterfall corruption and demonic threats recall damage left by the Third War. Everlook offers limited commerce in an otherwise dangerous region.

Full History

Winterspring lies high in northern Kalimdor beyond the ancient forests of Felwood and near the slopes of Mount Hyjal. Its snowbound valleys belong to a world that the night elves and druids knew long before the modern factions established their capitals. The region shelters powerful wildlife, secluded springs, and communities adapted to long winters. Travelers entering through Timbermaw Hold encounter a territory whose history is bound to the furbolgs, their sacred places, and the corruption that spread through the northern forests during the Third War.

The Timbermaw tribe strives to preserve its people amid the dangers that have overtaken other furbolg settlements. The nearby Winterfall furbolgs and other forest communities present the consequences of corruption, territorial conflict, and fear. The blue dragonflight's interest in arcane magic is visible in the presence of dragons around the region, while the ancient ruins of Kel'Theril evoke elven magic and tragedy. These places connect Winterspring to the wider history of Azshara's empire and the Sundering, but the details of every ghost or ruin should not be padded with imagined ancient rulers. The land itself offers enough mystery without speculation.

Everlook, operated by goblins, is a small commercial exception to the general isolation. Its inhabitants trade and offer passage to those willing to risk the mountains. The frostsaber wilderness and the approaches toward Darkwhisper Gorge give the area a particularly perilous edge; demonic presence to the south recalls the Burning Legion's assault on Hyjal. Winterspring does not need a later raid or expansion storyline to be historically important. Its snowy landscape preserves living furbolg traditions, scars from the Legion's march, older elven ruins, and the continuing work of those who guard the mountain forests after the Third War.

The ruins of Kel'Theril should remain a warning about the danger of ancient magic rather than a shortcut into later retail-era storylines. The furbolg communities, by contrast, have a living tradition and immediate struggles, giving the region a useful balance between buried mysteries and the choices of inhabitants still defending their homes.
