Quick Overview
The Timbermaw are furbolgs who survived the Burning Legion's corruption of northern Kalimdor without becoming servants of that darkness. They sheltered within Timbermaw Hold as Felwood sickened and neighboring tribes turned hostile. Their guarded tunnels connect Felwood, Moonglade and Winterspring, making them important to anyone crossing those wild lands. Their survival preserves a furbolg tradition of shamanism amid the consequences of the Third War.
Full History
Before the Third War, the northern forests of Kalimdor sustained many peoples living under the protection of the night elves and the old powers of nature. Furbolgs held villages and sacred places among the woods, shaped by longstanding shamanistic traditions. The Burning Legion's return brought catastrophe to that life. Demons and their servants poisoned the forest, and creatures once bound to its rhythms turned violent. The dead ground that became Felwood was one enduring scar of that invasion.
Most furbolg communities suffered grievously. Some became hostile under corrupting magic, while others lost homes that had supported them for generations. The Timbermaw escaped the same fate by withdrawing into their hold. Their tunnels threaded the mountains between Felwood, Moonglade and Winterspring, allowing them to survive behind guarded approaches while the world outside changed. Survival came with a cost: the forest they had known was still above them, but much of it had become a place where their own kin could no longer be trusted.
Even the defeat of the Legion did not restore Felwood. Illidan Stormrage destroyed Tichondrius and consumed the power contained in the Skull of Gul'dan, but the taint that had taken root in the land persisted. The Timbermaw watched the aftermath of a victory that had saved Azeroth without healing everything damaged in the struggle. For a people accustomed to listening to the spirits of the natural world, that silence was a kind of exile.
When the Timbermaw began to venture beyond their refuge, they met a fresh danger: strangers often saw only another tribe of dangerous furbolgs. The Timbermaw feared attacks born from confusion with their corrupted neighbors. They also had reasons of their own to distrust outsiders entering the hold. In Felwood and Winterspring, the Deadwood and Winterfall tribes posed a continuing threat; the Timbermaw sought not simply to defend themselves but to end the suffering of their corrupted relatives and perhaps heal the land itself.
Their guarded passage gave the tribe unusual importance in northern Kalimdor. Travelers wishing to cross between forest and snow country had to reckon with the inhabitants of the tunnels, while those who earned Timbermaw trust found a people with valuable healing and craft traditions. At the original World of Warcraft horizon, their story is neither the fall of all furbolgs nor a miraculous cleansing. It is the continued existence of a community that preserved its faith when its world was wounded, and that must decide whether trust can help rebuild what war destroyed.
