Quick Overview

The Burning Legion’s invasion poisoned the ancient forests of Felwood. Even after Archimonde fell, demonic corruption remained in the soil, wildlife, and trees. Druids of the Cenarion Circle established the Emerald Sanctuary to begin the long work of healing damage that victory in battle could not undo.

Full History

Before the Third War, the forests around Felwood formed part of the night elves' ancient woodland home. That inheritance was devastated when the Burning Legion brought its forces through Kalimdor. Demonic magic scarred the land, twisted creatures that lived there, and left corruption behind even after the defenders of Mount Hyjal defeated Archimonde.

The end of the battle did not restore the forests. Purifying the damage required druids willing to remain where the enemy's influence had taken root. The Cenarion Circle's work in Felwood included studying corrupted wildlife and seeking ways to cleanse the land without destroying what still survived. Their efforts joined an older night-elven commitment to guarding nature with the practical aftermath of a recent war.

The Emerald Sanctuary arose from that undertaking. It served as a base for people attempting restoration rather than conquest, in a forest where the Legion's defeat had not brought an end to suffering. The sanctuary's founding marks a different consequence of the Third War: warriors could drive an invading army away, but the damage left in the living world demanded patient work long after the armies departed.
