Quick Overview

The Kolkar are a centaur clan whose raiders spread from Desolace into the Barrens and other parts of central Kalimdor. Their attacks helped prevent the tauren from reaching a secure homeland until Thrall and Cairne Bloodhoof united their forces. In The Frozen Throne, a Kolkar khan also menaced orc settlers during Rexxar's defense of the young Horde. At World of Warcraft's beginning, the Kolkar illustrate why defeating one centaur warband never ended the wider struggle for the Barrens.

Full History

The Kolkar were among the centaur whose name came to mean danger along the roads of central Kalimdor. From their connection to Desolace, raiders moved into the Barrens and contested territory needed by travelers, hunters, and migrating tauren. Their presence was not a separate misfortune from the conflicts at the heart of centaur society. The Kolkar belonged to a wider population divided into clans, each with its own leaders and enemies, but united by a long history of warfare against the peoples living beyond Desolace.

For Cairne Bloodhoof's tauren, the struggle was existential. Centaur forces barred paths toward Mulgore and attacked those trying to find safety beyond the open plains. Tauren courage and custom alone had not broken this cycle. The arrival of Thrall's orcs changed the balance: the two peoples discovered that they could accomplish together what neither had safely accomplished alone. During the Third War, their cooperation drove back centaur attackers and allowed the tauren to establish a stronger home. The Kolkar survived that reverse. Losing a confrontation did not erase the raiding bands or their claims upon the contested land.

The danger returned during the events of The Frozen Throne. As Rexxar traveled through the frontier defending Thrall's new nation, a Kolkar leader named Khan Gragtor attacked an orc settlement and took captives. Rexxar's intervention against the khan made the threat personal: these were not distant riders appearing only in reports, but enemies capable of imprisoning ordinary members of the fledgling Horde. The incident belongs to the founding history of Durotar, when victory in a great war had still left families vulnerable to violence close to home.

At the opening of World of Warcraft, the Barrens still carry this older conflict. Kolkar warbands occupy areas near important water sources and routes, threatening travelers and settlements. Horde forces treat them as an immediate security problem, but their endurance reveals the limitations of a single campaign. Even with orcs and tauren sharing a homeland and military purpose, the plains remain open to raids from centaur factions whose grievances and habits of war did not disappear with the Third War.

The Kolkar also belong to a centaur world that fights itself. Beyond their incursions lie the quarrels among Gelkis and Magram in Desolace, a reminder that the centaur's own divisions do not make them harmless to outsiders. Their history connects three scales of the same struggle: the tauren's long displacement, Rexxar's defense of individual captives, and the continuing responsibility of the New Horde to protect roads and homes after its founding battles were won.
