Quick Overview

The Gelkis are a centaur clan based in southwestern Desolace and locked in a bitter feud with their Magram kin. Their rivalry survived the wider centaur expansion that drove tauren communities from their former range. In the original World of Warcraft setting, both Alliance and Horde authorities see the quarrel as a weakness they might exploit. Through the Gelkis, Desolace's history becomes more than a war between outsiders and centaur: it is also a fight within a people who cannot agree on their own future.

Full History

Before Thrall's Horde established itself in Kalimdor, the centaur were already a terror to the tauren of central Kalimdor. Desolace lay at the heart of their strength. Its open wastes, canyons, and approaches toward Mulgore were divided among khans and warbands whose rivalries could be every bit as dangerous as their campaigns against outsiders. The Gelkis occupied the southwest, where their settlement and its surrounding ravines stood across the region from the lands of the Magram. The clans belonged to a wider centaur world, but shared ancestry did not bring peace.

The Gelkis and Magram had become mortal enemies. Their feud was the kind of conflict that could outlast an individual battle: each loss hardened the expectation of another raid, and the rival clan's continued existence threatened local authority. Even at a time when the centaur as a whole possessed the strength to harry neighboring peoples, much of that strength was divided against itself. To the tauren who had suffered centuries of attacks, the distinction among centaur clans did little to erase the danger. Yet to a general trying to hold a frontier, their division presented an opportunity.

After Thrall and Cairne Bloodhoof became allies, the tauren at last gained the support needed to resist the centaur and settle more securely in Mulgore. That did not empty Desolace of hostile warbands. The Gelkis remained in their southwestern homeland, with the Magram close enough for the ancient feud to continue. Horde and Alliance representatives understood that an enemy divided by longstanding hatred might be weakened from within. They sought to cultivate relations with one side by directing violence against the other.

The Gelkis shaman Uthek the Wise stands at the center of this uneasy diplomacy in the original-era quest account. Outsiders are not greeted as trusted friends: they must demonstrate hostility toward the Magram before the Gelkis will even entertain their assistance. What looks to the distant Horde or Alliance like a clever political maneuver is, from the clan's perspective, another round in a bitter local war. Any foreign fighter entering the dispute risks becoming its instrument.

This is the legacy the Gelkis carry into the opening world of Warcraft. Their enemies are not only the orcs and tauren who now challenge centaur expansion, or the Alliance posts that stand within reach. They are their own kindred. The clan's story illuminates why control of Desolace remains fragmented even when the centaur possess numbers, weapons, and a long tradition of war: the land is divided by hatreds that no single conquest has erased.
