Quick Overview
Bael Modan began as an Ironforge expedition into the southern Barrens, where dwarven excavators sought knowledge buried beneath the earth. Their digging crossed the ancestral lands of the Stonespire tauren, whose protests were ignored. Explosives and armed guards drove the dispute into violence, leaving Gann Stonespire determined to reclaim what his people had lost. The site became an example of how the search for ancient relics could collide with living claims to the land.
Full History
The dwarves of Ironforge had begun searching for evidence of their people's distant origins, and expeditions from the Explorers' League pushed far beyond Khaz Modan. At Bael Modan in the southern Barrens, an excavation crew found promising ground and established a fortified presence. For the dwarves, the soil concealed relics worth recovering. For the tauren of the Stonespire tribe, the same hills were part of a homeland that sustained their families and carried memories of their ancestors.
The expedition treated the land as a dig site before it treated it as anyone's home. Blasting and excavation damaged the countryside, and complaints from the tauren failed to change the dwarves' course. The conflict escalated into displacement and killing. Gann Stonespire survived the loss and sought redress, but diplomacy had already failed him. His anger was directed not at archaeology alone but at the force used to clear his people from the land.
Prospector Khazgorm's own journal made the conflict starker: the value of the finds and the site's strategic position outweighed the comfort of the inhabitants in the expedition's judgment. Dwarven soldiers and machinery protected the works while the Stonespire considered how to resist. The dispute remained active rather than settled, with Gann calling for action against those responsible.
Bael Modan's history is not a simple struggle between learning and ignorance. It is the story of an expedition convinced that discovery justified possession, and a tribe that saw its home broken apart in the name of that discovery.
