Full History
The Bael'dun expedition came into the southern Barrens in search of the ancient past. Dwarven researchers under Prospector Khazgorm dug into the ground around Bael Modan, convinced that the buried history was worth the labor and the disruption. Their camps and machines extended the explorers' reach beyond the lands of Khaz Modan, but the excavation occupied country the tauren already knew as ancestral ground.
Gann Stonespire protested the damage done to the land. The blasts, torn hillsides and displacement of tauren families made the expedition's work appear less like scholarship than another invasion. Efforts to resolve the dispute failed. Gann then demanded force against the excavators and sought Khazgorm's records, believing that the dwarves would not leave until their work was made impossible.
The conflict exposed a rift between two ideas of inheritance. The dwarves hunted the physical traces of peoples who had lived long ago; the tauren defended a living relationship with the land. Both remembered a history deeper than recent political borders, but neither could reach agreement about who had the right to disturb it. Bael Modan became the place where those claims collided.
