Full History
The Explorers' Guild arose from the dwarves' determination to understand a past older than their kings and clans. Ironforge had long honored miners, smiths and warriors, but buried ruins and unfamiliar relics suggested that the origins of the dwarves lay beyond the stories preserved in family halls. King Magni Bronzebeard encouraged the search, giving scholars and prospectors a reason to venture far from the safety of Khaz Modan.
High Explorer Magellas led a community of researchers who mapped sites, recorded findings and studied ancient artifacts. Expeditions spread through lands where the remains of forgotten peoples were often guarded by creatures or contested by living communities. Archaeology carried risks that the comfortable galleries of Ironforge could hide: a dig might disturb dangerous ruins or occupy ground another people considered sacred.
The guild's work changed the meaning of dwarven inheritance. Where the War of the Three Hammers had divided the clans over power and territory, the explorers pursued questions that preceded those rivalries. Their discoveries promised to explain how their people fit into a much longer history of Azeroth, even while their methods sometimes brought them into conflict with those living among the ruins.
