Full History

The Druids of the Fang were born out of a failure of trust between a master, his disciples and the power they hoped to serve. Under Naralex, the original expedition into the Wailing Caverns had a benevolent purpose: to turn the underground springs into a source of renewal for the Barrens. Its members were students of druidism, not a raiding band or a clan of serpent worshippers. Their work was supposed to demonstrate that careful use of the Emerald Dream might give exhausted land a second life.

Then Naralex's dream was invaded by something darker. As he slept, an unnatural influence spread through the waters and living creatures of the caverns. The change did not stop at the walls of the cave or at the bodies of animals. Some of Naralex's closest followers were overcome, and the language of healing yielded to a new, savage identity. They became known as the Druids of the Fang, taking names such as Lord Cobrahn, Lady Anacondra, Lord Pythas and Lord Serpentis. Their chosen forms and serpentine power made the caverns dangerous for anyone seeking their missing teacher.

The most revealing feature of the Fang was that its leaders had once understood the very principles they now violated. These were practitioners trained to preserve the balance of life. Their corruption therefore struck at the heart of druidic teaching: when nature becomes a tool of obsession or domination, even those who speak in its name can do terrible harm. Lord Serpentis emerged as the group's dominant figure, holding the deepest parts of the cavern while the other fanglords controlled their own stretches of tunnels and springs. Each corrupted leader was an obstacle to Naralex's rescue, and together they made the caverns feel like a single hostile organism.

Outside the entrance, uncorrupted druids still sought a remedy. Their efforts show why the group cannot be treated merely as another faction of generic dungeon enemies. The fate of the Fang was bound to an ongoing rescue mission and to the wider concern of the Cenarion Circle for the Emerald Dream. Adventurers traveling into the Wailing Caverns confronted the fallen disciples not because the druids had always served evil, but because their former companions could no longer be reached by ordinary means.

At the launch-era boundary, the source record does not settle the full metaphysics of the Nightmare or the later fate of every surviving follower. It does establish the transformation, the leaders, the cavern setting and the danger to Naralex. The Druids of the Fang stand as a local tragedy with continental significance: a reminder that Kalimdor's hidden natural powers had not all become peaceful simply because the Burning Legion had been defeated at Mount Hyjal.
