Full History

The dream that overtook Naralex began with a generous ambition. The Barrens, for all its vast beauty, was a hard country of dust, dry grass and struggling settlements. Naralex, a night elf druid associated with the Cenarion Circle, believed the underground waters of the Wailing Caverns might help restore fertility to the land. Rather than accept the dry plains as he found them, he reached toward the Emerald Dream—the great spiritual reflection of untamed nature—and sought to draw its renewing power into the world.

The Wailing Caverns were an alluring place for such an undertaking. Beneath the sun-baked surface lay cool, twisting passages, pools and springs: the sort of hidden watershed that could nurture new growth in a land starved of rain. Naralex did not undertake the work alone. Disciples followed him into the caverns, some eager to learn and others committed to the same vision of rebirth. Their mission was not to conquer the Barrens, but to heal it. That purpose gives the tragedy its weight. What went wrong there cannot be understood simply as another evil cult establishing itself in a dungeon.

As Naralex slipped into a deep magical slumber, his connection to the Emerald Dream became entangled with a nightmare. The force working through his dreaming mind transformed the creatures and vegetation around him. Serpents, raptors and other inhabitants appeared in distorted forms; the caverns filled with life that had lost its natural balance. His students were afflicted as well. Several became the Druids of the Fang, taking serpentine names and defending the corruption rather than rescuing their master. The most prominent was Lord Serpentis, a former student whose loyalty to the original purpose had been twisted into something threatening.

By the opening of World of Warcraft, the sleeping druid lay at the center of a disaster that had outgrown him. Those who explored the caverns could follow the trail of corrupted disciples and, with the aid of an unfallen follower, attempt to wake Naralex. The awakening was not a matter of shaking a dreamer from sleep. Hostile creatures appeared to stop it, culminating in the arrival of Mutanus the Devourer, a monstrous manifestation associated with the nightmare itself. The druid's rescue was therefore bound to a broader struggle over the nature of the caverns and whether their corruption could be contained.

Naralex's story is an early warning about the difference between cooperation with nature and attempting to direct it by force. He had found a way to reach powers greater than himself, but he had not understood every danger waiting there. As the world stood at launch, the Wailing Caverns remained the visible consequence: a place where an intended garden had become an enclosure for a corrupted dream. His personal history before the expedition is not recorded in comparable detail, and the precise identity of the nightmare's originating influence is not settled by the original quest narrative.
