Quick Overview

Naralex sought to renew the Barrens by connecting its hidden springs to the Emerald Dream. The attempt brought new oases, but his meditation became trapped in the Emerald Nightmare, corrupting the waters and several of his followers. The Stagnant Oasis carries the consequences of an effort to heal the land that instead brought new suffering.

Full History

The Barrens had not always been the dry country crossed by the Horde's new settlements. Druid Naralex believed its lost abundance could be restored, and he descended into the Wailing Caverns to seek the waters that flowed beneath the land. With his followers, he tried to connect those underground springs to the life-giving power of the Emerald Dream.

The attempt produced new oases, but Naralex's meditation took a disastrous turn. The Emerald Nightmare overtook his vision, and the corruption spread outward through the waters. Creatures changed, the growth he hoped to encourage became distorted, and several followers were transformed into the Druids of the Fang. What had begun as a work of restoration became a source of danger to the land it was supposed to heal.

The Stagnant Oasis belongs to that failed undertaking. Its history is not the story of an ancient ruined city or a battle between kingdoms, but of a druid's attempt to undo environmental damage and the cost of allowing a hostile influence into the work. Naralex's original purpose remained generous even as the result testified to the hazards of touching the Dream without understanding what lay within it.
