Full History

Lord Serpentis was not always the monster waiting in the far reaches of the Wailing Caverns. Before the corruption, he belonged to Naralex's circle of students. He had learned the druid's teachings and taken part in an ambitious effort to bring life back to the Barrens through the hidden waters beneath its surface. That past matters because it explains the terrible contrast between his old allegiance and the person a visitor would meet beneath the winding stone passages.

When Naralex reached into the Emerald Dream, his sleeping mind came under the grip of a nightmare. The corruption carried into the caverns through the druid did more than change the animals there. It reached his followers. Some abandoned their former identities for new names drawn from serpents, and their once-disciplined magic became part of the danger. Serpentis rose among them as the foremost of the Druids of the Fang. He did not simply lurk in isolation: his position marked the deep center of a transformed order defending the nightmare's hold.

The other fanglords made the extent of the corruption plain. Lady Anacondra, Lord Cobrahn and Lord Pythas held other stretches of the caverns, each a reminder that this was not the fall of a single misguided student. An entire rescue expedition had been diverted into guardianship of the very disaster it was supposed to prevent. Serpentis was especially significant because he stood close to Naralex and because the awakening of the sleeping archdruid could not proceed safely while the corrupted order remained in control.

The original game presents Serpentis as an enemy to be confronted, not as a redeemed companion or a character whose full childhood and private motives can be reconstructed. That leaves room for tragedy without inventing it. He had served an admired teacher and practiced druidism; by the time heroes approached the sleeping master, he had become an obstacle between that master and help. Later accounts add details of his personal ambition, but the essential launch-era story is already clear without assigning him unrecorded conversations or inner thoughts.

Serpentis connects three histories at once: Naralex's attempt to heal the Barrens, the appearance of the Druids of the Fang, and the peculiar menace of the Wailing Caverns. He is relevant not because he commands an army beyond the dungeon walls, but because his fall turns the game's local adventure into a cautionary tale about corrupted guardianship. Once a student of renewal, he became one of its strongest enemies.
