Full History

The Wailing Caverns promised a miracle. Hidden springs ran beneath the scorched plains of the Barrens, and a company of druids believed they could turn that concealed water into a source of life for the surface. Naralex led the undertaking, drawing on the Emerald Dream in hopes of restoring growth where heat and dust had prevailed. For those who lived in the region, such a change would have been profound. The land's harshness shaped its inhabitants' daily struggles and helped explain why fertile pockets of ground mattered so much.

Instead, the druid entered a magical sleep and made contact with a darker influence. His dreaming mind became a way for corruption to reach the physical caverns. Creatures warped into unnatural forms. Water and vegetation no longer followed the ordinary rhythms that the Cenarion Circle sought to protect. Worst of all, members of the expedition were changed. Once dedicated to renewal, several disciples took serpentine titles and guarded the disaster as the Druids of the Fang.

That reversal made the caverns dangerous in a particularly intimate way. The enemies confronting an explorer were not a foreign army that had seized the site after Naralex arrived. Many were the very people who had come there to help him. Lady Anacondra, Lord Cobrahn, Lord Pythas and Lord Serpentis occupied different sections of the underground passages. Their defeat was linked to an attempt by uncorrupted followers to approach the sleeping master and break the nightmare's grip. The route to rescue was also a journey through the wreckage of the original mission.

When a disciple began the awakening, the corruption resisted. Waves of creatures appeared, culminating in the colossal murloc Mutanus the Devourer. The creature's intervention revealed how closely the nightmare had become bound to Naralex's sleep. It was not enough to reach the druid's body. The rescuers had to confront an intruding force that behaved as though the awakening itself were a threat.

At the original game's launch, the caverns preserve the consequences of this failed experiment. The exact identity of the power behind the nightmare is not settled within the original quest's evidence, and a later expansion's account should not be retroactively treated as a contemporary eyewitness report. The story's meaning is plain without that embellishment. An effort to heal the Barrens caused harm because the travelers who reached beyond the waking world did not fully understand what could reach back. The Nightmare beneath the Barrens is one of the earliest, most haunting examples of good intentions turning a landscape against itself.
