Quick Overview

The Council of Tirisfal arose from the need to contain the dangers unleashed by human arcane magic. Its magi entrusted great power to a single Guardian who would oppose demons without exposing the wider world to their threat. The system produced formidable protectors, including Aegwynn and Medivh. It also concentrated decisions about Azeroth's defense in the hands of a secretive order whose safeguards could fail.

Full History

Human magic grew rapidly after the Troll Wars, when high elves taught selected human allies to wield the arcane. Dalaran became a center of that learning, but spellcasting also attracted dangers that its young institutions did not fully understand. Demons pressed against the boundaries of the world, and the magi who recognized the threat feared that open knowledge of it would spread panic or invite reckless imitation.

The Council of Tirisfal formed to meet the danger in secrecy. Rather than allow every mage to fight alone, its members joined their powers in a chosen Guardian charged with seeking out demonic intrusions. For generations the arrangement gave Azeroth champions able to challenge threats beyond the strength of ordinary armies. But the method depended on trust: the Guardian held extraordinary independence while the Council tried to supervise a duty that could not be performed under constant scrutiny.

Aegwynn defied the Council's efforts to control her tenure and later passed the mantle's power to her son Medivh. Hidden corruption within Medivh eventually made him the instrument through which the Dark Portal was opened, allowing the orcish Horde to enter Azeroth. A system established to protect the world from demons had failed at the point of its greatest power. The Council's legacy is therefore both a history of formidable guardianship and a warning about secrecy joined to unchecked authority.
