Quick Overview
Lord Perenolde ruled Alterac, the weakest of the human kingdoms to join the Alliance against the Horde. Afraid that his realm could not survive another invasion, he weighed surrender against loyalty to the other kingdoms. His eventual betrayal shattered the Alliance's trust in Alterac.
Full History
Alterac entered the Second War as a small mountain kingdom with few soldiers or supplies to spare. Its ruler, Lord Perenolde, praised the efforts of Anduin Lothar and King Terenas, but feared that the Horde would overwhelm the Alliance. A defeat, he believed, might cost his people their lives as well as their sovereignty.
As the invasion deepened, Perenolde chose the security he hoped to obtain through cooperation with the Horde. Alterac's betrayal opened a passage for the enemy through territory that should have been defended by an ally. When the treachery came to light, the other kingdoms moved against Alterac and its independence collapsed.
Perenolde's decision left more than a defeated court. It divided the human kingdoms over what should be done with Alterac's lands and people, helping turn wartime cooperation into postwar rivalry. His fear of conquest had driven him toward the very course that cost his kingdom its place among its former allies.
