Quick Overview
Alterac's capital fell after Lord Perenolde betrayed the Alliance during the Second War. His decision to aid the Horde brought punishment upon the mountain kingdom and ended its independence. The ruined city later became contested ground for the Syndicate and ogres, both claiming what remained of Alterac's power.
Full History
Alterac had been one of the smaller northern human kingdoms, sheltered among mountain passes but vulnerable to the armies crossing Lordaeron. During the Second War its ruler, Lord Perenolde, feared the Horde more than he trusted the Alliance's chances of victory. He made a pact with the invaders, allowing them passage rather than maintaining his duty to the other human kings.
When the betrayal was discovered, the Alliance moved against Alterac. The kingdom lost its sovereignty, and its capital ceased to be the seat of an independent ruler. Former nobles and followers gathered in factions determined to reclaim what they believed had been taken from them.
The Syndicate became one of those inheritors, while the Crushridge ogres occupied parts of the abandoned city. Their struggle over the ruined capital prolonged Alterac's collapse well beyond the war that brought it down. The ruins bear the consequences of a ruler's decision to preserve his kingdom by betraying its allies.
