Full History
Night elven barrow dens were created for druids whose duties carried them into long sleep within the Emerald Dream. Their practice grew from the bond established between the druids, Cenarius and the living world. Years could pass while a sleeper's body remained protected in a sanctified chamber and his spirit wandered a realm hidden from ordinary waking life. The dens were therefore places of responsibility, not tombs abandoned by an extinct people.
Ban'ethil was established on Teldrassil after the night elves undertook the immense task of building a new homeland in the wake of the Third War. The great tree was an attempt to recover some of what had been lost with the sacrifice of Nordrassil's blessing at Mount Hyjal. Druids of the Talon and other defenders depended upon sacred places such as this one to continue their ancient discipline. The growing tree, however, did not bring an end to corruption and conflict.
The Gnarlpine furbolgs eventually seized the den, profaning a sanctuary intended for dreaming druids. Their occupation showed how precarious the new homeland remained. The history of Ban'ethil is not a story of long-deserted architecture; it is the interruption of a living night elven practice during the struggle to establish Teldrassil.
