Full History

Astranaar arose beside Ashenvale’s lakes as a stronghold of night-elven life in a forest protected for thousands of years after the Sundering. Its wooden structures and moonwells continued a society shaped by druidism and reverence for the natural world.

The Third War carried the Burning Legion and invading orcs into those woods. After the victory at Mount Hyjal, the night elves confronted the unfamiliar fact of a lasting Horde presence on the continent’s eastern side.

For generations Ashenvale had been part of the night elves' long vigil, a forest protected by Sentinels while many druids slept in the Emerald Dream. The Great Sundering had ended the empire's old political grandeur, but it had not ended the kaldorei's sense of responsibility for their surviving lands. Astranaar became one of the settlements through which that care could be organized. Its moonwell and defenders showed the continued connection between communal life and the forest's sacred identity. The forest was a home, a memory of catastrophe and a refuge from the civilization the night elves had chosen to leave behind.

The Third War radically unsettled those assumptions. Orcs seeking timber entered the woods, Grom Hellscream's forces fought the night elves, and the Burning Legion's armies passed through Kalimdor toward Mount Hyjal. Victory against Archimonde depended upon cooperation, yet the immediate postwar world left disputes over territory unresolved. Astranaar's defenders faced the challenge of living beside allies of convenience who might become rivals over resources. The settlement's history is not a simple story of ancient guardians resisting newcomers; it is the struggle to adapt a ten-thousand-year tradition of protection to a world with new states, new roads and permanent neighbors.

Astranaar serves as a center of resistance and continuity. Its people must protect the forest from lumber operations, satyr corruption and the encroachment of powers that arrived with the world’s most recent war.
