Quick Overview

The Thistlefur furbolgs occupied villages and dens in Ashenvale, a forest they shared uneasily with night elves and the newcomers of the Horde. Their growing aggression troubled travelers and local Sentinels. The tribe’s decline reflects a wider crisis among once-familiar forest peoples during and after the Third War.

Full History

Furbolg communities belonged to northern Kalimdor long before orcish settlements appeared in Ashenvale. They lived close to the woods and had ancient relationships with the kaldorei. The Thistlefur were one of these peoples, but after the Third War their warriors had become violently territorial. Their occupation of Thistlefur Village and nearby holds was not the arrival of a wholly foreign army; it was the transformation of a local community into a danger to its own neighbors.

Night-elven Sentinels took notice as Thistlefur numbers and raids increased. Raene Wolfrunner’s response targeted warriors and the chieftain Dal Bloodclaw, revealing the severity of the threat to travelers around Astranaar. The Horde also viewed the tribe as an obstacle along routes serving its Ashenvale positions. Thus a local furbolg conflict acquired strategic importance for both factions, even though neither faction created the tribe’s original homeland.

Not every Thistlefur warrior shared the same reasons for hostility; the wider forest had suffered both war and demonic corruption. Suspicion and fear worsened as the tribe lost its former peace with neighboring peoples, while armed patrols from both factions increased the bloodshed. Ashenvale’s older forest relationships were fraying, and the Thistlefur stood among communities whose loss of trust made the aftermath of the Third War more dangerous.
