Quick Overview

The Stonesplinter are troggs who haunt the southern reaches of Loch Modan. Their incursions near Stonesplinter Valley threaten dwarven settlers, patrols and the routes around Thelsamar. Their presence reflects the wider trogg problem facing the dwarves of Khaz Modan after underground excavations brought violent subterranean peoples into contact with surface settlements. Their story links the history of dwarven discovery to the price of holding a country whose depths are not secure.

Full History

The dwarves of Khaz Modan built a kingdom around mountains, roads and a remarkable confidence in stone. From Ironforge they cut passes through the heights, established outposts and raised the dam that held the waters of Loch Modan. The settlement of Thelsamar gave them a foothold beside the lake, where merchants and miners could cross between the heart of the dwarven kingdom and the lands farther east. Yet control of the surface did not mean control of every cavern beneath it.

Troggs were part of the danger the dwarves encountered as their curiosity and mining exposed older, hidden places. Their brutal attacks and unfamiliar societies challenged the assumption that the depths were merely sources of ore or relics. In Loch Modan, the Stonesplinter tribe established itself in the southern valley and surrounding ground. Patrols charged with defending the King's Lands found their work repeatedly interrupted by hostile trogg bands. A frontier could begin only a short distance from a settled town when a subterranean enemy knew the ground better than the people holding the road.

The Stonesplinter attacks took place in a kingdom with larger troubles. Ironforge's people continued to face Dark Iron enmity, older memories of the War of the Three Hammers and the threats left by the orcish invasions. Against that history a clash with troggs might appear minor. But no kingdom can guard its roads or feed its towns if local communities are repeatedly driven back by raids. The Stonesplinter exposed the smaller, daily cost of keeping a broad homeland safe.

Their presence also fit the wider archaeological story of the dwarves. Explorations at places such as Uldaman raised questions about ancient stone creatures, the nature of the world beneath the mountains and the origins of the dwarven people themselves. Those mysteries should not be confused with a proven genealogy for every Stonesplinter trogg. What matters in the original account is the coexistence of dwarven hunger for the past and the immediate danger encountered as that past is disturbed. Their own search for forgotten origins made encounters with the underground a recurring part of life.

At the opening of World of Warcraft, the Stonesplinter remain established near Loch Modan and the dwarves continue to defend the area. No definitive victory or destruction of the tribe is assumed. Their story adds a scale often lost among the great wars: the Kingdom of Ironforge endures not only by resisting armies but by keeping watch over valleys where the land itself can shelter hostile neighbors.
