Full History

Gilneas was one of the proud human kingdoms of the north when Stormwind fell to the orcs. Its ruler, Genn Greymane, was reluctant to answer Anduin Lothar's appeal for unity. The other kingdoms faced the same danger, but they disagreed about how much authority and treasure each realm should surrender to a common defense.

The Alliance of Lordaeron defeated the Horde in the Second War, yet its victory brought expensive obligations. Orcish prisoners required guarding and feeding, and rebuilding damaged lands strained royal treasuries. As memories of the invasion faded, Gilneas sought greater distance from the coalition rather than accept permanent dependence on Lordaeron.

That separation grew from an older habit of guarding its own interests. The kingdom believed strong borders and its own rulers could protect it without binding its future to the quarrels of the other human realms. The rise of the Scourge would challenge the assumptions behind that policy, as the destruction of Lordaeron showed how quickly an enemy could overturn the order beyond a neighbor's walls.
