Full History
Genn Greymane ruled Gilneas while the human kingdoms faced the growing threat of the orcish Horde. When refugees from Stormwind warned the north about the invasion, Anduin Lothar sought to assemble a coalition strong enough to stop the enemy. Greymane doubted that Gilneas needed to submit its interests to the ambitions of other kings, and his reluctance exposed the difficulty of forging unity from proud rival realms.
The Alliance of Lordaeron nevertheless gathered under Terenas and fought the Second War. Victory left the kingdoms with the burdens of imprisoned orcs, devastated provinces and disagreements over who should pay for the peace. Gilneas's independence remained a powerful concern in those disputes. Greymane saw little reason to let the fortunes of his realm be determined by another capital.
His position reflected a larger weakness in the Alliance. The kings had learned to fight together under the pressure of invasion, but they had not agreed what permanent cooperation should mean. Their rivalries would matter when the Scourge brought a different kind of war to Lordaeron, one that could not be kept outside Gilneas simply by declining a northern king's appeal.
