Full History
Pyrewood had been a human community under the shadow of the keep that later became Shadowfang. Lordaeron fell to the Scourge, and neighboring Gilneas turned inward. Human survivors in Silverpine faced insecurity from creatures and armies on every side. The mage Arugal sought an answer to the undead threat in a force fierce enough to confront it, summoning the worgen.
The worgen did not remain safely directed against the Scourge. They overran the nearby castle and brought fear to settlements below it. Pyrewood was struck by a curse whose horror lay in its rhythm. During daylight its inhabitants could appear as ordinary human townspeople; after dark they transformed into violent worgen. The cycle trapped a community between the remnants of human life and the consequences of forbidden magic. No invading army had to level every building for the village to lose its former safety.
Pyrewood’s predicament was bound to Shadowfang Keep and Arugal’s influence. The village links Silverpine’s wider political story—the fall of Lordaeron, the isolation of Gilneas, and the rise of the Forsaken—to the smaller suffering of civilians. The village’s curse shows how a desperate defense against the undead could become a lasting torment for the people it was meant to save.
