Full History

Sapphiron was a mighty blue dragon in Northrend when Arthas returned to the frozen continent. The prince was no longer Lordaeron's defender: Frostmourne had claimed him, and his allegiance belonged to the Lich King. His journey toward Icecrown led him through the territories of creatures that would have resisted any mortal army, including the ancient dragons whose powers had once helped guard Azeroth.

Arthas and the crypt lord Anub'arak crossed paths with Sapphiron during their race toward the Frozen Throne. They defeated the dragon, but death did not free it from Arthas's purpose. The death knight raised Sapphiron into undeath, turning a formidable guardian of the frozen north into a frost wyrm in the Scourge's service.

The dragon's fate showed how the Scourge turned the strength of its enemies against them. Lordaeron's dead had already marched beneath Arthas's command; now a blue dragon could be bent into the same army. The battle was one stage in a greater struggle for Icecrown, where Arthas intended to reach the Lich King before Illidan's forces destroyed the Frozen Throne.
