Sun Rock Retreat was established in the Stonetalon Mountains as the tauren looked beyond the security of Mulgore. Centaur pressure had made the tribes' earlier migrations dangerous, and Cairne Bloodhoof's alliance with Thrall offered them the chance to defend a permanent homeland. That security depended on connections to the surrounding country, where threats could move long before they reached Thunder Bluff.
The Stonetalon passes linked the Barrens with wooded highlands contested by several peoples. Orcish expansion brought new pressures, while the Venture Company exploited timber and minerals for profit. Tauren guardians needed places to watch the approaches, aid travelers and support those negotiating the difficult terrain between the Horde's settlements.
Sun Rock Retreat grew from the tasks of that unsettled peace. The tauren were no longer only fleeing attacks; they were helping defend a wider region alongside allies whose ambitions did not always match their own. Their outpost became part of the new political order created after Mount Hyjal, when the Horde's survival began to depend on maintaining the lands through which its people traveled.
