Full History
Ratchet grew on the coast of the Barrens as a goblin port where commerce could thrive despite the rivalries of Kalimdor. The Steamwheedle goblins valued passage, shipping and profit more than the claims of any one faction. Their harbors connected travelers whose peoples had recently fought wars across continents, giving them a place to trade without first agreeing on who should rule the land.
The rise of Thrall's Horde made the Barrens central to a new political order. Orcs, tauren and trolls crossed the region while Alliance outposts guarded approaches to their own holdings. Ratchet's merchants used those movements to build routes and services that could outlast a battle. Ships and caravans required practical agreements even where trust was scarce.
The port's history is not the founding of a grand kingdom. It is the growth of a neutral foothold during an unsettled age, built by goblins who recognized that newly established powers still needed supplies and passage. Their independence could be precarious, but that very position let Ratchet draw business from peoples who otherwise had little reason to meet in peace.
