Quick Overview

The Southsea Freebooters are pirates whose ships threaten commerce around Ratchet and the coast of Tanaris. Their raids challenge goblin merchants who depend on moving goods by sea between distant ports. The Freebooters belong to the unsettled maritime world that grew around the new Horde's arrival in Kalimdor. Their history shows why the ocean beside the Barrens could be as dangerous to a frontier settlement as any hostile army on land.

Full History

The coast of Kalimdor was never an empty edge of the map. Ships carried supplies between its harbors, moved travelers past dangerous interiors and gave merchants the chance to profit from distant markets. Ratchet grew into an important goblin port on the edge of the Barrens, linked to the roads traveled by the new Horde yet governed by mercantile concerns of its own. For a trader, the value of such a harbor depended on ships arriving at all. The Southsea Freebooters made that security expensive.

Their crews attacked shipping, stole goods and established camps close enough to menace the approaches to Ratchet. The coast south of the town offered places from which pirates could wait for vessels that had already committed to a passage. Among the threats known to Ratchet's merchants were Southsea raiders who took losses out of cargo holds rather than fought under the banners of orc or human kings. Their war was primarily for plunder, and the damage spread through warehouses and markets long after a particular ship had escaped or been taken.

The Freebooters' activities also touched Tanaris. In that desert region, the coastal coves served pirates who could strike at sea traffic near Steamwheedle Port and the trade connections of Gadgetzan. The same water routes that made goblin enterprises possible were vulnerable to ships with no allegiance to the agreements that governed port business. Ratchet's irritation with pirate losses and Tanaris's dependence on imported supplies belonged to one wider problem: merchant fortunes were built on routes they could not entirely police.

Nor were the Southsea pirates simply another branch of the Bloodsail Buccaneers. Those enemies threatened Booty Bay far away in Stranglethorn, while the Freebooters operated in the waters that mattered to Kalimdor's settlements. Their existence nonetheless reveals a shared weakness in the world's trade network. Goblin wealth did not eliminate piracy; it attracted it, bringing armed sailors to the fringes of otherwise profitable towns.

In the original World of Warcraft world, the Freebooters remain a threat to shipping rather than a defeated episode in naval history. Their story expands the meaning of a frontier. The new Horde could secure a road inland, and a goblin port could negotiate with its neighbors, yet neither measure guaranteed that the next ship would reach harbor. Commerce, profit and violence traveled together along Kalimdor's shores.
