Full History

Booty Bay took shape around a sheltered port at the southern tip of Stranglethorn, far from the direct rule of human kings. Goblins developed it into a marketplace for sailors, traders and opportunists willing to brave the jungle and surrounding seas.

Stranglethorn’s older history belonged to the Gurubashi troll empire, whose ruins and successors remained in the interior. Booty Bay’s growth represented a different sort of power: ships, money, neutral dealing and commercial arrangements that crossed the boundaries between Horde and Alliance.

The goblins' achievement at Booty Bay was to make a dangerous coast commercially indispensable. Gurubashi settlements and sacred sites already existed throughout the interior, and the region held dangers that could overwhelm an unprotected caravan. A port with ships, warehouses and negotiators offered a way to move goods without attempting to conquer the entire peninsula. In this sense Booty Bay grew through calculation rather than legitimacy of royal descent. Its prosperity relied on rivals accepting that a neutral exchange was sometimes worth more than exclusive control.

That calculation did not eliminate the violence of the seas. The Bloodsail Buccaneers contested the approaches and threatened the trade on which the city depended. The Blackwater Raiders and their employers had to combine commercial enterprise with force, accepting the uneasy relationship between profit and piracy. The journey across the Great Sea to Ratchet made Booty Bay part of an intercontinental goblin network just as the Horde and Alliance built new political structures after the Third War. A traveler reaches the city to buy a passage or sell cargo, but the larger history is the rise of networks that can continue operating even when kingdoms cannot agree on borders.

Under Baron Revilgaz and the Blackwater Raiders, the port is a haven for transactions that more orderly kingdoms would find uncomfortable. Rival pirates menace its shipping, yet the trade routes linking it to Ratchet make it one of the most consequential small cities of the original world.
