Quick Overview

The Steamwheedle Cartel built Gadgetzan as a trading center deep in Tanaris, linking desert enterprises with shipping through Steamwheedle Port. Goblin merchants made commerce possible where a human or orcish kingdom had little lasting authority. Its growth rested on contracts, engineering and guarded neutrality.

Full History

The goblins of the Steamwheedle Cartel were willing to establish businesses where the great kingdoms rarely ventured. Tanaris offered little fertile land, but it lay within reach of the South Seas and the distant routes running across Kalimdor. Gadgetzan became the cartel's desert trading center, paired with the coastal settlement of Steamwheedle Port.

Merchants, miners and engineers brought their work to the settlement. Rather than bind trade to the fortunes of one army, the cartel maintained a neutrality that allowed rival peoples to do business under its rules. Armed goblin enforcers protected that commerce, because an attack on a customer could threaten the interests of every other trader.

Gadgetzan's history belongs to the expansion of goblin enterprise. The cartel created a durable commercial community not by conquering the desert, but by turning its difficult location into a place where others had reason to gather.
