Full History
Brightwater Lake entered Forsaken history through an unusual survivor of Lordaeron's destruction. On an island in the lake dwelt Gunther Arcanus, a necromancer transformed by undeath but no longer bound to the Lich King's will. Gunther did not know that other undead had also broken free. Believing those who approached to be servants of the Scourge, he defended his solitude with magic and loyal followers.
His existence drew the attention of Bethor Iceshard, who had known Gunther before the plague. Bethor recognized that a skilled necromancer might become an important ally to Sylvanas's fledgling kingdom. He sought proof of the lich's identity through Gunther's spellbook, rather than treating him as another mindless enemy. The attempt to reach Gunther exposed the fragile distinction between independence and isolation among the newly freed undead.
Brightwater Lake thus became the setting for a choice central to the Forsaken's beginning. The Scourge had taught them that undeath meant enslavement; Sylvanas offered the possibility of a shared purpose. Gunther's mistrust showed how difficult it could be for someone robbed of life and freedom to accept that others had also escaped the Lich King's control.
