A lich ruling among the tangled brambles of Kalimdor seems, at first, far removed from the devastation of Lordaeron. Yet Amnennar the Coldbringer is one of the clearest signs that the Scourge's reach is not confined to the northern kingdoms. At the original World of Warcraft launch, the undead had taken control of much of Razorfen Downs, the sacred burial maze of the quilboar. Amnennar presided over that occupation, turning a place of ancestral remembrance into a forward position for a power that trafficked in death.
The setting matters. Razorfen Downs was not a disposable ruin. It stood within the great thorn colonies associated with Agamaggan, whose death in the War of the Ancients was remembered by the quilboar across generations. The Downs served as a revered center and burial ground. Generations had died there and been honored there. A Scourge commander willing to animate corpses and bend the living to obedience could therefore do more than seize territory: he could profane the relationship between a people and their dead.
Original dungeon accounts describe a looming shadow over the Downs and an undead occupation led by a powerful lich. Quilboar fought to recover their domain while undead creatures infested the twisting passages. The cultic Death's Head became associated with the transformation of the Downs into an undead stronghold. Amnennar stood at the center of that new order. He did not need to capture a major city to become dangerous. Establishing an organized Scourge presence in the southern Barrens threatened trade routes, local villages and anyone who believed the war against undead had ended at the sea.
The neighboring Razorfen Kraul sharpens that danger. There, Charlga Razorflank and other quilboar leaders were said to be dealing with forces that might include Scourge envoys. These rumors must be separated from the visible state of the Downs, where the undead occupation is part of the original dungeon story. Together they reveal how the southern Barrens could be pulled into conflicts far larger than the ancient territorial disputes between quilboar, tauren and orcs.
Amnennar's launch-era significance rests on his role, not on an invented earlier biography or later stories about a phylactery and repeated returns. His origin before his command of the Downs is not described with the detail given to Ner'zhul or Kel'Thuzad. What players can observe is enough: he turned a sacred maze into a Scourge bastion and forced a people already embattled to fight for the resting place of their ancestors. His hold on Razorfen Downs is a small-scale echo of the catastrophe that had consumed Lordaeron.
