Full History
Stonard arose during the Horde's first campaigns in Azeroth, when the orcs pushed into the swamps south of Stormwind and sought a foothold beyond the Dark Portal. The marshes offered cover and a route toward the human kingdom, but they also tested an invading army unused to Azeroth's lands. The settlement became one of the lasting traces of the orcs' earliest military presence on the continent.
From the southern swamps the Horde carried war northward. Stormwind eventually fell, and the conflict spread across the sea into the Second War. Orcish leaders changed, clans fought among themselves, and the defeat at the Dark Portal ended the old Horde's dreams of conquest. Yet the history of their first footholds did not vanish when their armies were broken.
Under Thrall, the orcs began a different political life in Kalimdor. Not every stronghold of the old campaigns belonged to that new beginning. Stonard still marked the earlier age, when the orcs arrived as conquerors and treated the swamps as a staging ground against Stormwind. Its history therefore reaches back to the first war, not merely to later disputes along the swamp roads.
