Full History
Nethergarde Keep was founded to guard the southern kingdom against another invasion through the Dark Portal. After the Second War, victory had not erased the danger posed by the gateway between Azeroth and Draenor. Khadgar and the Alliance understood how much destruction had come through it, and a permanent fortress near the Blasted Lands became part of the answer.
The keep was more than a border post. Its garrison watched a wasteland scarred by demonic and orcish power, while the Alliance tried to understand a threat that conventional walls had never been built to contain. When Ner'zhul renewed the struggle from Draenor, forces gathered again around the portal. Khadgar and other champions crossed into the shattered world to stop the war from returning to Azeroth on an even greater scale.
The expedition's fate did not make Nethergarde unnecessary. Whatever became of the gateway, the keep stood at the edge of a place where the world's boundaries had once been broken. Its founding expressed one lesson of the orcish wars: defeating an invading army could not guarantee safety while the road that carried it remained a danger.
