Grom'gol Base Camp became a Horde foothold on the northern coast of Stranglethorn, within a region whose jungles and ruins reflected the long decline of the troll empires. After Thrall founded the New Horde in Kalimdor, relations between its peoples and those of the Eastern Kingdoms remained tense. Positions far from Durotar required supply routes, defenders and allies who could navigate hostile country.
The Darkspear trolls brought knowledge of Stranglethorn and of the rivalries among jungle tribes. Their earlier exile and alliance with Thrall gave the Horde a place in the region's conflicts beyond the claims of Stormwind or the goblin merchants. A camp established along the coast could support expeditions without depending on the roads held by human kingdoms.
Grom'gol grew out of the new Horde's effort to remain connected across an ocean. Unlike the orcish strongholds founded to conquer Stormwind in the First War, it belonged to an alliance that included the trolls whose ancestral home lay within the jungle. Its story begins with exile, renewed allegiance and the need to defend a distant foothold amid older quarrels.
