Quick Overview

Fenris Keep once defended Lordaeron from an island in Lordamere Lake. The Scourge emptied the fortress, and Thule Ravenclaw took it over with necromantically animated Rot Hide gnolls. The Forsaken traced the magic behind those creatures as they fought to prevent the Scourge from consolidating its hold on Silverpine.

Full History

Before the plague engulfed Lordaeron, Fenris Keep was a military outpost on an island in Lordamere Lake. Its position gave the kingdom control of a crossing in Silverpine and sheltered a garrison behind the water. That protection ended when the Scourge swept through the north. The keep was abandoned as its defenders fled or perished, leaving a human fortress without a human army.

The Rot Hide gnolls, themselves dead creatures animated through necromancy, occupied Fenris Isle. Their master, Thule Ravenclaw, had abandoned his former colleagues to serve the Scourge. Under his direction the gnolls carried corpses from burial grounds along the lake, while magical ichor sustained their unnatural existence. An island that once protected Lordaeron became a refuge for the very powers that had destroyed it.

The Forsaken's struggle to secure Silverpine drew them toward the keep. Their apothecaries studied the fluid circulating through the Rot Hides and traced the method back to Ravenclaw. Knowledge of the magic offered a way to fight the creatures instead of sending soldiers blindly into a ruined fortress. Fenris Isle became part of a bitter contest between undead who sought freedom from the Lich King and undead who remained servants of his plague.
