His role reveals how obedience to a powerful sovereign could become complicity in an empire's destruction.
Full History
Captain Varo'then served Queen Azshara at the height of the night elf empire, when the power of the Well of Eternity had drawn the Highborne into dangerous experiments with magic. His loyalty was to the queen and the court that surrounded her, not to the growing resistance among the night elves who opposed the coming of the Burning Legion.
As Azshara's chosen commanders helped protect the imperial order, the Highborne's sorcery opened the way for demons to invade Kalimdor. Varo'then stood on the side of those who sought to preserve the queen's designs while the country beyond the palace suffered. The war exposed the terrible distance between the desires of the royal court and the lives of the people whose civilization it claimed to lead.
The struggle around the Well of Eternity ended in the ruin of the ancient empire. Varo'then's fate was bound to the queen's disastrous alliance with powers she believed would exalt her rule. His place in that history is the captain who defended a doomed court while the resistance fought to save what remained of the world outside it.
