Full History
Malfurion Stormrage challenged the magic sustaining the Legion's passage into Azeroth at its source. While Xavius and the Highborne strengthened their connection with Sargeras, Malfurion sought ways to interrupt that work. His early mastery of druidic powers offered a different answer to the threat than the arcane methods upon which Azshara's court relied.
The Well of Eternity had made the kaldorei empire wealthy in power and prestige, but its exploitation also gave the invading demons their route into the world. Malfurion understood that defending the land required more than defeating soldiers pouring through an open gate. The gateway itself, and the Highborne maintaining it, had become central military objectives. His efforts through the Emerald Dream took the struggle beyond conventional weapons and battlefield lines.
The resistance ultimately faced a choice imposed by the Well's corruption: leave the source of its civilization's power intact for the invaders or risk a catastrophe to stop them. Malfurion's interference with the Highborne workings belongs to the longer chain of actions leading toward the gateway's collapse. His role also established the contrast that would shape night elven society afterward, between stewardship of the natural world and the dangerous dependence on unrestricted arcane power.
