Quick Overview
The Gurubashi governed the major jungle-troll civilization of ancient southern Kalimdor and later Stranglethorn. They shared early ancestry and loa traditions with the Zandalari but developed distinct southern territories and imperial leadership. Their history passed through the aqir war, the Sundering, famine, and the crisis surrounding Hakkar. By original WoW, Zul’Gurub and its surviving factions embodied both the achievement and the division of the old empire.
Full History
The original Troll Compendium identifies the Gurubashi as one of the leading offshoots of the ancient Zandalar tribe. While the Amani occupied temperate forests, the Gurubashi built strength amid the southern jungles. They competed with neighbors and fought the expansionist aqir, but the two great empires were also rivals and never formed a permanent unified government. Their shared foes did not erase cultural or geographic differences.
Later lore makes the Aqir–Troll War a major stage in this development. The Gurubashi fight across the southern reaches of ancient Kalimdor while the Amani pursue Kith’ix and the Drakkari move north. The original account is different in chronology: its Gurubashi and Amani empires are already present during the war. It is therefore more precise to say that war helped define and defend their spheres of power than that one battle created every modern troll tribe.
The Great Sundering was devastating for the southern trolls. Jungles were lost, coastlines changed, and peoples who had once belonged to the wider Gurubashi sphere were isolated. The Sandfury in Tanaris provide one example: a jungle-associated community that became a desert people. In Stranglethorn hardship and famine invited religious desperation. The blood spirit Hakkar offered renewed conquest but demanded increasingly terrible sacrifices, splitting the Gurubashi into Hakkari supporters and opponents.
The priestly Atal’ai sought to give Hakkar lasting physical power in the world. Zandalari intervened alongside dissenting Gurubashi, and the conflict scarred the empire. By original WoW, the ruins of Zul’Gurub reveal not a perfectly unified jungle nation but the legacy of ritual conflict, ambitious priests, surviving tribal loyalties, and efforts to contain the consequences of Hakkar worship. The story of Hakkar belongs thousands of years after the origin of the troll empires and must not be conflated with the earlier battle of Tyr and the C’Thraxxi.
