Full History
The Vile Reef lies off Stranglethorn, where the sea connects the jungle to histories older than the coastal settlements. Across ancient Kalimdor, Queen Azshara's empire drew power from the Well of Eternity. Its collapse brought the Great Sundering, breaking the old continent and drowning lands that had once belonged to the night elves. The transformation scattered the remnants of that empire beneath new waters.
Azshara and her surviving followers became the naga, a people of the deep who carried aspects of the old Highborne world into the oceans. Their movements brought them into conflict with coastal peoples long after the Sundering. The reefs and submerged ruins along Stranglethorn's shore belong to that wider struggle for the margins between land and sea.
Not every stone beneath the reef can be assigned to a named king or a recorded battle. Its importance is in the history that made such a coast possible: the collapse of a world-spanning magical empire and the survival of its transformed rulers under the sea. The threat that came ashore was not new simply because the people living above had only lately encountered it.
