Quick Overview

The Scarlet Monastery’s library was once part of Lordaeron’s religious and scholarly life. After the Scourge destroyed the kingdom, the Scarlet Crusade turned the monastery into a fortress of militant faith. Knowledge and teaching became intertwined with an increasingly intolerant campaign, guarded in the library by Arcanist Doan.

Full History

The Scarlet Monastery had once belonged to Lordaeron's religious life, serving the priesthood as a place of study and devotion. Its transformation followed the kingdom's destruction by the Scourge. Survivors who had seen towns consumed by plague gathered around a militant vision of the Holy Light, determined that the undead and anyone suspected of serving them must be destroyed.

The Scarlet Crusade needed more than swords to maintain that conviction. Its teachers preserved writings, trained new members, and helped define the beliefs by which the order judged friend and enemy. The monastery's library passed from a center of learning into the custody of an organization increasingly ruled by suspicion. Its keeper, Arcanist Doan, represented an unusual place for arcane practice inside a movement chiefly identified with militant religious zeal.

The books and learning of the monastery became entangled with a cause that treated dissent as a threat. Those who survived Lordaeron's fall had reasons to fear the Scourge, but the Crusade's answer widened that fear until it reached the living as well as the dead. The library's history captures the change: an institution founded to preserve knowledge became part of a fortress that increasingly restricted whom its defenders could trust.
