Quick Overview

Taretha Foxton befriended Thrall while both lived under Aedelas Blackmoore's control at Durnholde. She secretly helped him learn, endure captivity, and eventually escape. When Thrall returned to free the imprisoned orcs, she tried to prevent another bloodshed. Blackmoore executed her, and her death preceded Thrall's assault on Durnholde.

Full History

The human settlement around Durnholde held one of the great tragedies left behind by the Second War. Orcs who had survived the Alliance victory were confined in camps under human guards, and the child known as Thrall grew up in the custody of Aedelas Blackmoore. Taretha Foxton belonged to a human family bound to the keep's service. She found the captive orc a person rather than the monster his master intended him to become.

Blackmoore had designed Thrall's life to produce an obedient fighter. The orc learned human speech and tactics and was made to fight in the arena, never permitted to forget that his talents belonged to the officer who controlled him. Taretha offered him something no training could supply: friendship, concern and a view of a wider world. Their exchanges gave Thrall a reason to imagine freedom instead of merely survival.

Their bond carried grave risks. To help a captive escape was to defy the authority governing Durnholde and endanger everyone close to its ruler. Taretha nevertheless aided Thrall when he sought to leave, and the orc passed beyond the walls to search for his own people. Among the orcs he learned of the shattered Horde, met leaders who challenged his understanding of their history and eventually embraced the shamanic inheritance that Blackmoore had never intended him to possess.

The freedom Taretha helped make possible transformed Thrall's purpose. He no longer hoped only to evade a human master. He wanted to release the other captive orcs and give them a future outside the internment camps. As his forces gathered, Blackmoore's fortress stood in the way of a people trying to escape the defeat that had made them prisoners. Durnholde became the place where personal cruelty and the greater legacy of the war would finally collide.

Blackmoore's response to Thrall's demands was savage. He had Taretha killed and displayed her severed head before the army at the walls. The act destroyed any hope that Thrall could bargain for a peaceful release of the captives. His warriors assaulted the fortress, and Thrall confronted and killed the officer who had shaped so much of his early life. Once the surviving defenders were allowed to leave, the keep was brought down.

Taretha did not live to see the orcs establish a new homeland. Her influence endured nevertheless. Thrall's struggle was never simply a rejection of everything he had learned among humans; it was also a choice to honor the compassion that one of them had shown him. Her friendship remained part of the moral foundation of a Horde seeking freedom without making bondage its answer to former enemies.
